Canadian War Museum acquires Canadian-made contemporary armoured vehicle

Canada NewsWire

OTTAWA, ON, Oct. 28, 2026 /CNW/ -- As contemporary conflicts reshape the global security landscape, the Canadian War Museum is collecting objects that reflect Canada's role in these events. The latest addition to the Museum's national military collection is a Roshel Senator MRAP (Mine-Resistant, Ambush Protected) Smart Armoured Vehicle: a type of vehicle currently being used for combat, evacuation, security, and other frontline roles in Ukraine.

This acquisition reflects the Museum's mandate to collect and preserve objects that document Canada's military history. The Senator MRAP provides a tangible record of the ways in which Canadian technology, manufacturing, and international relationships continue to shape the country's experience of modern conflicts.

"The Roshel Senator MRAP adds a contemporary example of Canadian defence technology to the Museum's military vehicle collection," said James Whitham, Director General of the Canadian War Museum, and Vice-President of Research, Collections and Exhibitions for the Canadian Museum of History. "It creates opportunities for future exhibitions, research, education, and public programming related to Canadian defence technology, industry, international relationships, and the changing nature of conflict. Acquisitions such as the MRAP also allow us to preserve material evidence as history unfolds, while helping Canadians understand who we are at home, as well as our place in the world."

The Senator MRAP was donated by Brampton, Ontario-based Roshel Inc., designer and manufacturer of the Senator family of armoured vehicles. First introduced in 2018, the Senator family has since become among the most widely recognized Canadian-made military vehicles in service today. Since 2022, more than 2,700 Roshel Senator vehicles have been delivered to Ukraine through government aid packages and international partners.

"Every Senator we build embodies the skill and determination of the Canadians who build it, and the trust of the people who depend on it to come home safely," said Roman Shimonov, CEO of Roshel. "We are honoured that the Canadian War Museum is preserving this vehicle as part of Canada's story. It is a reminder of the role Canadians have played in helping Ukraine defend itself, and of the women and men in uniform these vehicles were built to protect."

The Canadian War Museum's Senator MRAP was one of the first of its kind to roll off the line in 2023. Built on a Ford F-550 chassis, the mine-resistant ambush protected (MRAP) variant features enhanced blast and ballistic protection, a V-shaped hull designed to deflect explosive blasts, and the capacity to transport up to 10 personnel.

The vehicle arrived directly from the Roshel manufacturing plant this summer and was featured in demonstrations during the Museum's annual War Machines Weekend. It is currently on display in the LeBreton Gallery.

By adding contemporary objects to its collections, the Museum helps people across Canada connect the stories of our peoples and communities with the defining forces that have shaped, and continue to shape, our country and sovereignty.

The Canadian War Museum is Canada's national museum of military history. Its mission is to promote public understanding of Canada's military history in its personal, national and international dimensions.
