Truckability, based in Sydney, NSW, Australia, has released a step by step guide on how to get your heavy vehicle licence in Sydney. The first step is to determine which truck or bus licence class is needed. Each bus or truck licence class has a different Driver Knowledge Test (DKT). In the second step, it is important to prepare, practice, and then take the DKT for the specific licence class desired. The third and final step is to complete an HVCBA test with an accredited Registered Training Organisation like Truckability.

To determine which bus or truck licence class to aim for, it is essential to understand the various classes. The Light Rigid (LR) Class Licence will allow the individual to drive any rigid type of bus or truck under 8 tonnes GVM. The GVM of the truck or bus is usually printed on the rego label. The Medium Rigid (MR) Class Licence is for driving a truck or bus with over 8 tonnes and 2 axles GVM. For the MR licence class, any towed trailer cannot exceed 9 tonnes in weight. The Heavy Rigid (HR) licence class will allow the individual to drive any truck or bus with GVM exceeding 8 tonnes and has three or more axles. Towed trailers for this class cannot exceed 9 tonnes GVM.

The Heavy Combination (HC) licence class will allow the individual to drive any articulated truck or bus with three or more axles. Also possible are heavy rigid trailer combinations, including unladen dolly with three or more axles. Towed trailers for this class can be over 9 tonnes GVM. The Multi Combination (MC) licence class will allow the individual to drive prime movers, B-doubles, road trains, and low loader trailer combinations.

According to Truckability Truck Training, the preparation and practice required will depend on the licence class. Each bus or truck licence class has a different DKT. For the LR licence class, the applicant needs to have had a C class licence or equivalent for at least one year. The applicant will also need to pass the DKT, an eyesight test, and successfully complete HVCBA or pass a roads and maritime driving test. The DKT will have two parts: part 1 contains 15 general questions of which at least 12 must be correct while part 2 will have 30 road safety questions of which at least 29 must be correct.

The MR licence class will basically have the same requirements as the LR class except that the questions will be about driving MR class trucks or buses. Same with the HR licence class except that the knowledge test will be about driving HR class buses or trucks.

For the HC licence class, the requirements are basically the same as the LR, MR and HR class licences except that the applicant must have held an HR or MR class licence or equivalent for at least one year. The DKT will, of course, focus on HC type trucks or buses. Lastly, the MC licence class will have similar requirements as the HC class licence except that the applicant has to have held an HR or HC class licence or equivalent for at least one year and the applicant must a pass a medical exam.

Those who want to take the DKT for their specific licence class will need to book online or in person at any service centre of their choice. They will also need to bring along a filled out application form.
